Hiking, photography, wild camping, travels, van… Here are all the subjects that we be broaching here on Awaiting Outdoors. Hope you will enjoy it !
My name is Matthieu, and I have been travelling, hiking and taking pictures for many years now. Everything started when I was a child and then a teenager. My parents were found of the French moutains so I spent all my summers hiking everywhere in the Northern Alps or in the Pyrénées. That’s where it all comes from.
Life and studies made me take a break with summer hikes and travelling during my studies and the few following years, but everything went back in my middle twenties after a 3 week backpacking trip in the fjords of Norway with a good friend. Going far away to enjoy freedom and wilderness became a real goal for my holidays : Scandinavia, Canada, USA, Alaska, Russia, China… I have travelled during my holidays every year for 15 years now, and I experienced different kinds of travelling, from the backpacking trip to the lazy road trip.
I really picked up on photography around my 30th birthday. It took me some time to improve my skills and learn how to compose a picture… but I think the biggest step was to realise that lazy pictures are not worthy enough and lack personal value. Driving so much just to check as many places as possible from the “bucket list” will not make strong memories and nice pictures. I slowly came back to hiking and wild camping trips and then started to improve my pictures a lot… and enjoyed more and more being outside far from everything.
My wife Claire and I have been travelling together for more than ten years now, and I think we found years after years a way to travel that best suits us both : we now spend more days in each area, trying to explore them more, rather than spending time discovering wellknown places. We use the car just for long drives between mountain ranges, coasts or counties.
Life gave us two young kids the last few years, and they gave us a real challenge for our travels. I can tell you : to combine kid needs, long travels, hiking, and outdoor photography is not that easy. We did many trips only with our small tents when we were only the two of us, but the arrival of our second child made us take the best decision we took in the last few years : buying a van to sleep and travel in.
We bought it in autumn 2017 and it changed everything : we can now stop anywhere with the kids and the dog (yes… it is like we needed another challenge…). This gives me the opportunity also to enjoy the lonely hikes and the photography trips I love early in the morning – starting before sunrise – while eveverybody is still sleeping in the van somewhere in the mountains. I won’t say it is easy, but it works for us.
I have had a photography website for many years now, but I’ve decided to start Awaiting Outdoors this year (autumn 2019) to share more than pictures : hiking trips and descriptions, advice, tips, etc… So here we are. I hope this website will give you some nice ideas to experience yourself. Feel free to comment my posts and videos and to give me your best practices and tips in return.
